Abstract

|
Purpose: This study was to identify the relationship between perception of good death and hospice among middle-aged members of local church.
Method: The subjects of study were 203 members of a local church located in G city between the age of 40-59. Data was collected between October 1 and 30, 2012 by visiting the local church and with structured questionnaire.
Results: The degree of perception of good death was mean 50.33±12.06, average mean 2.96±0.74. The degree of perception of hospice was mean 67.06±12.27 and average mean 3.04±0.55. There was a significant difference in attendance of hospice education (t=2.23, p=.026), according to general characteristics in the perception of good death in middle-aged members of local church. There was a significant difference in willingness to take the hospice education (t=2.73, p=.007), employment status (t=2.21, p=.031) and title in church community (t=-2.42, p=.016), education (F=4.22, p=.006), monthly income (F=2.86, p=.038) and the number of years of attending church (F=3.71, p=.012), according to general characteristics in the perception of hospice in middle-aged members of local church. There was a significant positive correlation between perception of good death and hospice (r=0.333, p<.001).
Conclusions: Perception of good death of middle-aged members of local church was moderate and perception of hospice was slightly high. Therefore, education of good death and hospice is needed with focus on the middle-aged members of local church. This education is expected to help preparing their good death and live more mature and fulfilled life.
